Overview of the AATCC Spray Rating Test
AATCC 22 is a common spray rating test that measures a treated fabric’s resistance to wetting by water. This spray rating test was developed in the 1940’s to test the water repellency on fabric.
When To Use a AATCC Spray Rating Test?
The spray rating test can be used for a variety of fabrics, from apparel to industrial applications. Durable water repellent (DWR) is typically added to fabrics to create water resistance and prevent the fabric from wetting out. Typical end-uses include:
- Backpacks
- Horse blankets
- Camping tents
- Outdoor wear
The spray rating test measures the water-resistance of fabric, not water penetration of fabric.
How Does the AATCC Spray Rating Test Work?
- Test uses 250 mL of 80 degree water.
- The water is sprayed from a shower head at a 45 degree angle.
- The specimen is visually inspected based on the spray rating chart below.
