What is Cordura® Fabric?

Overview

Cordura® nylon is an extremely durable fabric made with nylon 6.6 yarn and used for a variety of industrial applications. It is air textured, which provides bulk and strength, has excellent tensile strength and abrasion resistance, has excellent color fastness to light, and a high resistance to tears and punctures. TVF sells several popular Cordura® fabrics, both nylon and polyester, including 210, 420, 500, 630, 915, 1000 and 1050 denier.

Can Cordura® Nylon be Dyed?

Cordura® Nylon is inherently difficult to dye due to its molecular structure, however, this is also why the color doesn’t fade easily, making it ideal for applications where durability and color fastness are critical.

Why is Cordura® Fabric Often Streaky When Dyed?

Cordura® fabrics can be slightly streaky when dyed due to their dense and robust nylon 6.6 structure, which may lead to uneven dye absorption. T-6.6 nylon also has a higher level of Titanium Dioxide which helps increase the tenacity of the nylon. In turn, this yarn has fewer dye sites for dye to penetrate, making an uneven appearance. This characteristic is part of what makes Cordura® fabrics uniquely durable but also presents challenges in achieving uniform coloration.

Cordura® Fabric Filament Counts

Filament refers to the fine, continuous fibers used to create yarns and fabrics. The number of filaments will significantly change the texture and hand of the Cordura® fabric. A 1000 Denier Nylon may have a filament count of 140 filaments or 280 filaments – the denier is the same, but the Cordura® fabric will feel different. The fabric with a higher filament count will have a softer hand and can be used for apparel in addition to industrial end uses.

Cordura® Fabric Facts

  • Cordura® fabrics were originally designed for military tire use during World War II.
  • Cordura® fabrics have been utilized in the development of habitats and other inflatable constructions for use on the moon and Mars, due to its high durability, resistance to extreme temperatures, and ability to withstand the harsh conditions of outer space.
  • Cordura® fabrics were used in the manufacture of space suits for the Apollo astronauts, showcasing its durability even in extreme conditions.

Cordura® Fabric Care Instructions

Machine wash Cordura® fabrics in cold water with mild detergent. Avoid using bleach or fabric softeners, as these can degrade the fabric’s performance qualities.
Tumble dry Cordura® fabrics on a low heat setting or air dry. High temperatures can damage the fabric over time, so it’s best to use moderate heat if machine drying.

If necessary, iron Cordura® fabrics on a low heat setting. It’s advisable to use a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric to prevent melting or damage.
